
UNDP Graduate Program 2025
The UNDP Graduate Programme provides an incredible opportunity for talented young graduates to gain hands-on experience in international development work, by working with a UNDP country, regional, or headquarters office. Launched in 2021, the programme aims to diversify the UNDP workforce, strengthen organizational capacity, and create a pipeline of passionate professionals for the future of international development.
In line with other UNDP youth talent initiatives, the Graduate Programme is specifically designed for recent graduates from UNDP programme countries, giving them the chance to contribute to global development while gaining valuable professional experience.
History of the Programme
Since its launch, the UNDP Graduate Programme has made significant strides in attracting a diverse group of applicants. The first cohort in 2021 saw over 38,000 applicants from more than 130 countries, with 33 candidates selected for the talent pool. Out of these, 18 were deployed in 2022. The second cohort in 2022 had a similar response, receiving over 37,000 applications from 145 UNDP programme countries, with 36 candidates selected, and 19 deployed in 2023-2024.
Graduates are placed in different UNDP offices around the world, including country offices, regional hubs, or headquarters, providing them with an invaluable experience across different regions and areas of expertise.
Where Are Graduates Deployed?
The UNDP Graduate Programme has already deployed graduates to various countries globally. Some of the key duty stations for graduates from Cohorts 1 and 2 include:

- Turkey
- Thailand
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Mongolia
- Philippines
- Papua New Guinea
- Samoa
- Timor Leste
- Maldives

Who Can Apply?
The UNDP Graduate Programme seeks to inspire the next generation of UNDP professionals and fill the organization with new, diverse perspectives. It is open to individuals from UNDP programme countries and specifically encourages applications from women, minority groups, indigenous peoples, and people with disabilities. Additionally, graduates who are the first generation in their family to attend university are strongly encouraged to apply.
To apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, with a maximum of 1 year of relevant work experience, OR a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
- Have a strong interest in pursuing a career in international development and a commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Possess systems thinking, innovation, and digital skills.
- Be fluent in English (spoken and written). Knowledge of other languages like French, Arabic, or Spanish is a plus for some positions.
- Be ready to live and work in another country for 2 years.
What the Programme Offers
The UNDP Graduate Programme is designed to equip participants with the skills and experience needed to kickstart a career in international development. Here’s what it offers:
1. International Assignment
Participants receive a 2-year assignment at one of the UNDP’s country, regional, or headquarters offices. The assignments focus on two main streams:
- Programme and Policy: Contribute to the planning, implementation, and management of UNDP’s development programs and projects.
- Corporate Operations: Support UNDP’s internal management, operations, policies, and processes that drive the success of the organization’s projects.
2. Personal Growth
UNDP offers a customized Formation Journey to help participants build knowledge, expand capabilities, and gain hands-on experience with experts in the development field. This exposure will provide the strategic insights needed to pursue a career in multilateral cooperation and sustainable development.
3. Career Pathway
The Graduate Programme serves as an excellent pathway into UNDP and the broader UN system, providing exposure to various international organizations and the development community. It allows participants to work at the forefront of sustainable development, contributing to SDG goals and addressing key global challenges.
